8 Easy Beach Waves Tutorials How to Get Beachy Waves in Your Hair

Take a small section of hair, and wrap it around the curling iron or wand, leaving the ends untouched for that natural look. Repeat this process throughout each section, alternating the direction of the wrap for a more textured outcome. Take small sections of hair, twist them slightly, and glide the straightener down. Effortless waves that seamlessly blend sophistication with a hint of boho. As a dynamic husband and wife duo behind Curl Centric, our passion for curly hair has fueled a transformative journey.

She brings nearly a decade of writing and editing expertise, and her work has appeared in Allure, Health, Fitness, Marie Claire, StyleCaster, and Parents. She also has an unhealthy adoration for Tom Hanks and would like to please meet him one day, if you could arrange that. This wave styling trick incorporates a flat iron into the mix rather than a curling iron — a choice that, as YouTube beauty vlogger HeyKali says, makes the waves look extra shiny. If you have thick, long hair, this tutorial might take longer than the others, but your flawless waves will be totally worth it. Beach waves have only grown in popularity over the years because of their versatility. "They are the perfect balance between curls and straight hair and work for almost every hair length and type of situation, from a presentation at work to a night out," she explains.

How long does it take for scrunch waves to set?

If you have wavy hair, though, you're quite lucky because you're in the middle of the spectrum and can choose to lean more straight or curly should you want to. From Ciara and Blake Lively to J.LO and Sydney Sweeney, keep scrolling for looks that range from high glam to effortless. Plus, two professional hairstylists share tips on how to recreate some of the looks.

Full-Length Lob With Tousled Waves

This not only ensures your hair is free from any buildup but also sets the stage for optimal styling. By making a few changes to your hair care routine, you can get clearly-defined waves that last for the whole day. Flat irons are one of the most versatile tools in any beauty arsenal. While they’re best known as straighteners, they can give you perfect beachy waves in minutes. Squeaky clean strands are slippery and won’t hold texture well, so curl your hair a day or two after washing it for the best results.

Gentle Drying

Then, you'll want to get familiar with your hair growth pattern and where your crown is located. You'll have to start brushing your hair every day to keep the waves intact, so make sure you're brushing in the right direction. Hollywood waves—those bouncy, barrel-curled blowouts—have taken red carpets by storm for decades.

SheaMoisture Curl Mousse for Frizz Control

Its formulated with premium ingredients like volcanic minerals and Rhodiola extracts. This delightfully scented spray gives straighter strands a dose of shine, body, and frizz-free texture. Sleeping with your hair in braids is one of the easiest and gentlest ways to make straight hair wavy. "I would use the bulk of the product on wash day after washing and conditioning," he says. If your waves need a little boost on day two or three, take a little more wax on your fingertips to whip your waves back into shape.

Using a Curling Iron

This will distribute the spray evenly throughout the hair from roots to ends, and prevent your strands from getting weighed down by too much product. If you have super straight hair that has difficulty holding waves, you can quickly run a flat iron over the braids before taking them out. Before braiding your hair make sure to apply some styling cream for hold. Starting out with towel-dried, damp hair you’ll apply mousse from root to end. Then using your fingers twist 1” sections of hair away from your face until it’s all twisted up.

These products help add texture, and definition, and hold to your waves, keeping them looking their best. When using a curling iron to make straight hair wavy, it’s best to choose one with a barrel size that matches your desired wave intensity. For loose waves, opt for a larger barrel, while smaller barrels are ideal for tighter curls.

In between wash days when you want to refresh or add shine, Washington recommends using some oil and sheen. Use in moderation, depending on your hair type and texture. He also recommends washing your hair no more than two times per week. This allows the natural oil produced by the scalp to do its job of moisturizing the hair follicles and scalp more effectively.

Use a Flat Iron

Braiding your hair before bedtime and sleeping with the braids in can produce beautiful waves by morning. Similarly, twisting sections of your hair and securing them before sleeping can also result in natural-looking waves. Understanding the differences between straight and wavy hair is crucial because it helps you determine the best approach for achieving your desired hairstyle.

"Other wavy hairstyles have definition and texture that comes from the waves going in different directions, and there is a lot of movement," hairstylist MariLynne Cosmillo adds. In conclusion, this guide has equipped you with the knowledge and confidence to embrace wavy hair like a pro. These methods offer versatile options for making straight hair wavy, allowing you to achieve your desired look with ease.

I reached out to a few of my favorite hairstylists, masters of their craft who have encountered this problem often in their line of work. Below, they detail the best techniques and products to use when you want your styled curls to have some staying power. From light conditioners and hot tools to a "cradling" technique, keep scrolling for the answers that you've been looking for.

Vintage waves get a modern makeover with this shoulder-hovering bob. The smaller the curling iron you use, the tighter the curl will be. To replicate Jessica Chastain's waves, use Conair's One-Inch Instant Heat Curling Iron ($15). Amp up your A-line bob with a bedazzled hair slide and crimped waves. The frequency of scrunching depends on your hair type and styling preferences.

Continue turning the flat iron until you’ve completed a full rotation, then pull it down again and twist the flat iron once more. It’s important to move quickly as you pull and twist to create those loose waves. The first factor to consider is the natural texture of your hair. If you have fine or thin hair, you may see results more quickly than someone with thicker or coarser hair. This is because fine hair is generally easier to manipulate and hold a style.

Wet hair doesn’t hold styles as well, and we’re aiming for waves that last. Straight hair is characterized by its smooth, sleek appearance. It’s the hair type that air-dries effortlessly, and brushing through it results in a silky flow. But don’t let that fool you – achieving waves on this canvas is entirely possible. In lieu of potentially drying sea salt, this texture-enhancing spray uses rice proteins to amp up your hair’s volume and absorb excess oils. Its sulfate and paraben-free formula uses the superfood moringa to soften, hydrate, and detangle your hair.

Work through small sections, ensuring each strand gets the attention it deserves. Once your hair is squeaky clean, be gentle with the drying process. Pat your hair with a soft towel to remove excess water – no vigorous rubbing here!

This beachy wonder not only adds texture to your waves but also provides a natural-looking hold. Spray it onto your waves and scrunch gently for that effortlessly tousled effect. Apply a small amount of heat protectant or styling primer to safeguard your strands from the upcoming styling tools. These products not only shield your hair from heat damage but also help the waves hold their shape longer.

That's why you see hairstylists using their fingers to brush out clients' curls for a looser, more lived-in look. But if your hair frequently falls, opt out of that technique. "Cool the curl by cuddling your hair in your hands for 10 seconds after each curl," says Molina. "By allowing them to cool off, you are preventing your hard work from relaxing and loosening too quickly." Depending on the factors mentioned above, you may start to see results within a few weeks or it may take several months. It's important to be patient and consistent with your hair care routine.

Heatless methods such as braiding, twisting, or using flexi rods can create beautiful waves without exposing your hair to heat. There are several methods you can use to create waves in straight hair, such as braiding or using a curling iron. Experiment with different techniques to see which one works best for your hair type.

You can usually find her sorting through piles of beauty products — and testing the best ones on camera. She exudes old Hollywood glamour with her sleek retro waves. If you have fine hair, use a thickening spray to fake texture—we like Boldify's Hair Thickening Spray ($23). Look closely and you'll see that RiRi's slight lift at the roots adds height to her lob and middle-parted fringe.

12 Best Shampoos for Frizzy Hair 2024 Top Frizzy Hair Shampoos

best shampoo and conditioner for frizzy hair

There are a few advantages of using a shampoo bar instead of a packaged bottled shampoo. Shampoo bars come in different shapes, including circular, triangular, rectangular and more. Bars with a triangular shape can make them easier to control, while circular shapes might be harder to grip but lather more easily in your hair, says Jordan. “If you don’t wash often (less than once a week), replace your regular conditioner with a nourishing luxury masque,” she recommends. Importantly, conditioners help to restore vital nutrients, and moisture, thus providing strength and protection in various forms. It also is ideal for the trifecta — frizz-fighting, shine-boosting and highly moisturizing — making it a wonderful add-to-cart purchase.

VIRTUE Smooth Shampoo

It acts as both a heat protectant and an anti-frizz smoothing cream, so you won't need to weigh down your hair with multiple products before—or after—your blowout. Similar to hair oils, anti-frizz serums, like this one from Morracanoil, are great for taming unwanted puffiness, flyaways, and static without adding excess bulk to your hair. Smooth a few drops throughout the bottom half of your hair while it's damp to help minimize frizz as it dries, then reapply as needed throughout the day to smooth things out and restore hydration. Color Wow Dream Coat is one of Fagiani's go-to product recs for everyday styling, whether with a blow dryer brush, diffuser, or flat iron. "I usually suggest all of my clients use leave-in conditioners and treatments to help keep the hair strong and moisturized," says Fagiani. As our experts will attest, the best anti-frizz hair products vary widely depending on your hair type, texture, and the end style you're going for.

This luxurious shampoo combines keratin protein with plant-based nutrients to act as a daily in-shower smoothing treatment. The color-safe shampoo gently cleanses, then addresses frizz at the source by smoothing the hair cuticle, reducing friction between strands and repairing damaged areas. It also smells amazing, thanks to a combination of citrus, lavender and mint essential oils. Plus, all Virtue products are free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, synthetic colors and dyes. If you’re looking to make your frizzy hair a bit smoother, the best conditioners for frizzy hair are great tools to add to your arsenal.

Curlsmith Hydrate & Plump Leave-In

It's effective at removing oil and dirt, without compromising on the soft, glossy finish we expect from a high-end shampoo. Did we mention the classic shampoo is obtained with 100% clean energy, while its solid counterpart is completely carbon offset? A fantastic investment for anyone looking to go greener with their haircare. "Shampoo works to clean the scalp and hair, which in turn can promote hair growth," says Boakye.

It’s not the most moisturising of shampoos, but that’s what the matching conditioner is for. “First and foremost, I love the shape of this shampoo bar because it fits great in my hand and doesn’t slip,” says NBC Select updates editor Mili Godio. This shampoo is also available in a bundle with a hydrating shea butter conditioner bar. Having a great-smelling shampoo and conditioner can make every wash day feel like a treat, and this duo from Moroccanoil does not disappoint.

Don’t just buy the first shampoo bottle you see that says “anti-frizz” on it! Danusia (she/her) is a senior chemist in the Beauty, Health and Sustainability Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute where she evaluates haircare, skincare, cosmetics and beauty tools. In pharmaceutical sciences with concentration in cosmetic science from the University of Cincinnati. Danusia has over 10 years of experience in the personal care industry including formulation, product development, claim evaluation and efficacy testing. “After five weeks, my color still looks great — my hairdresser commented on it,” one user reported.

"I have hair that gets super dry on the ends while getting oilier at the roots, so it's been hard to find a shampoo that tackles both," she shares. A good stylist should never let you off the hook when it comes to treating dandruff, and Witherspoon is no exception. When her clients come in with obviously dry, flaky scalps, she immediately recommends they start using Briogeo’s weekly Scalp Revival treatments. Given the Italian manufacturer, it shouldn’t come as a shock that one of the magic ingredients in this shampoo is olive extract!

Depending on the type of damage your hair has, it demands a different solution. These fit into two principal categories – protein treatment and moisture treatment. Most people assume that frizzy hair has a single meaning – hair with a mind of its own, fuzzing out and curling in all directions. It turns out there are specific names to describe different kinds of frizz – who knew.

Best for Color Care

Briogeo is a clean hair-care brand, and Farewell Frizz is a standout formula for curly, flyaway hair that can be challenging to style. What’s unique about this product is that it deeply cleanses the hair, and the inclusion of argan, rosehip, and coconut oils will leave hair shiny and hydrated. Plus, the product is vegan and cruelty-free, so you can get all the benefits without the guilt.

If you’ve ever struggled with dandruff, check out our guide on the best dandruff shampoos for more great options for sensitive scalps. Those with fine or thinning hair should opt for a lightweight shampoo that won't weigh down their delicate strands, which is exactly where the Nexxus Ultralight Smooth Shampoo comes into play. As one of our top picks for the best shampoos for dry hair, this product features a (seemingly) weightless formula — seriously, I didn't even feel it come out into the palm of my hair in the shower! Because of its light and airy texture, I found it incredibly easy to massage into my scalp. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that my usually knotty, tangled hair was quick — and relatively pain-free — to brush out the following day, even after going to bed without styling it. Fagiani says you shouldn't be shy about using products on wet hair because "frizzy wet hair will always become frizzy, dry hair." This is particularly true for curly hair types, as they're the most frizz-prone.

Hairstory's New Wash is especially unique in that it actually has the texture of a creamy conditioner — and it doesn't foam up. As such, spending at least a minute massaging the product into the scalp is key to fully absorbing the product. My hair still felt knotty after one wash, so I decided to rinse and repeat, which did the trick.

This shampoo for color-treated hair (which has hundreds of 5-star reviews on Ulta, btw) helps enhance and protect your dye job while moisturizing your hair so it looks nice and shiny too. John Frieda's Frizz Ease line is iconic, and the collection's nourishing shampoo is one of my favorite drugstore shampoos for giving hair a smooth, sleek look. Testers rave about the scent and way it minimizes frizz and helps repair breakage and split ends. This bb is a Cosmo Holy Grail Beauty Award winner, so it's editor-approved too. This static-fighting, sulfate-free shampoo-and-conditioner duo works to calm unmanageable strands. It's also sustainably sourced and formulated to add softness, smoothness, and shine.

Davines is an Italian brand focused on sustainability and beauty; its LOVE shampoo wants you to have smooth and frizz-free hair without using harsh surfactants like SLS to get there. It’s also free from silicones and sulfates, two of the harshest chemicals for the hair – but it does contain artificial fragrances, sodium chloride, and alcohol. These can be drying ingredients, but the positive items in the formula should counteract their effect for the most part. The Kerastase Fluidealiste shampoo might seem like a regular shampoo at first, but in reality, it’s anything but.

If you like your products to be on the natural side but still want them to deliver the goods, then Aveda's long-loved, volume-boosting shampoo is well worth a whirl. The plant-based formula contains coconut-derived surfactants (which are gentler than the much-debated sodium lauryl sulphate), and delivers a supreme lather, sweeping away every last trace of oil and product residue. If you feel like you’re constantly pumping mousses and dry shampoos into your roots, only for them to fall flat mere minutes later, you likely need to take a few steps back. The road to thick, full hair actually starts in the shower – specifically, with a specialist shampoo for fine hair. Hair growth shampoos can help if poor scalp health is to blame for hair thinning or shedding.

Like an all-natural Drano for your hair follicles, the ACV Revitalizing Shampoo works to unclog your scalp just like a scalp scrub, exfoliating while also removing oil and build up to help stimulate your hair growth cycles. If you’re looking for luxury shampoo features without the price point, look no further than Odele. This up-and-coming, women-owned and -operated, Minnesota-based brand has done its homework and delivers all of the features you would expect from products three-to-four times the price.

Project Kingsman

While the claim that Enzo Ferrari hailed it as "the most beautiful car ever made" remains legendary, its iconic status is unquestioned. Rooted in history and inspired by the racing success of the D-Type, which secured three consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans starting in 1955, the E-Type emerged as the next chapter of the legendary vehicle's aesthetic and design. This new design not only ushered in a new look for the company but also introduced a cutting-edge concept for its time - a front subframe seamlessly integrated with the engine, front suspension, and bodywork, eradicating the need for a traditional ladder frame chassis. The new design led to a remarkably lightweight contender for the track, with its earliest examples weighing only 1,315 kg (2,899 lbs). Early auto manufacturers focused on functionality over aesthetics, but it wasn’t long before marques and their customers valued the automobile as much for its emotional allure as for its practicality. Before and after World War II, formal courses of study on the subject began to emerge, drawing from the disciplines of fine art, architecture and industrial design, each reflecting the culture and character of its environs.

Celebrate Jane Austen's Birthday With a 360-Degree, Interactive Tour of Her House Travel

jane austen house

In 1940 Dorothy Darnell, a local woman, founded the Jane Austen Society with the aim of saving the House. The Society attracted the attention of a benefactor, Mr. T.E. Carpenter, who personally acquired the House for the sum of £3000, and endowed it to the nation  as a permanent memorial to his son, Philip Carpenter, who had been killed in action in Italy in 1944, aged just 22. With the house's more tactile offerings now off-limits, Dunford and her team set about creating a new kind of Austen experience, one less rooted in touch and more rooted in atmosphere—including the clever deployment of hidden audio players throughout the house. "I've overseen a strange period" in the house's life, Dunford says, with smiling understatement, via Zoom. All other dogs on short leads are welcome throughout the gardens and outside the tearoom, where water bowls are available for them.

Historic Sites Associated with Anne Boleyn

“It’s not just a love story,” says Louise West, curator of Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton, England. Soldiers returning from WWI were given the novel for its soothing abilities, West says, to help calm shell-shocked nerves. And it was a frequent crutch for Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who cracked the book in times of stress. Today, Jane Austen’s House is a Grade I listed building, an accredited Museum, and one of the most important literary sites in the world.

Hatton Garden

Mentioned numerous times in Jane Austen’s letters as ‘the great house’, Chawton House belonged to Jane Austen’s brother, who inherited the home from Thomas and Catherine Knight, but was also enjoyed by Jane Austen as much as her own home. Located near the town of Basingstoke, Manydown Park was the house where a teenage Austen first danced with Tom Lefroy, an impetuous suitor who later became Lord Chief Justice of Ireland. “Imagine to yourself everything most profligate and shocking in the way of dancing and sitting down together,” Austen wrote to her sister Cassandra in 1796. Sadly, Lefroy was shipped home to the Emerald Isle to curb the budding romance. Six years later, Austen was again embroiled in a romantic intrigue at Manydown after receiving a proposal from the wealthy, younger Harris Bigg-Wither, whose family owned the house. Although she initially accepted, Austen scandalously reneged just hours later, then fled the scene.

The Jane Austen House is situated in the village of Chawton, about 50 miles southwest of London and has long been a mecca for the novelist's most passionate fans, often referred to as Janeites. The Museum's collection includes eight music books owned by Jane Austen, with pieces transcribed in her own hand. Jane lived at what is now Jane Austen’s House for the last eight years of her life. She moved here in 1809 with her mother, sister Cassandra and friend Martha Lloyd after a period spent living in lodgings. The house was owned by Jane’s brother Edward, who had been named heir to the wealthy  Knight family and had since inherited the Chawton Estate. The house – a 17th century building – was offered to the women rent-free for life.

Jane was a frequent guest at the house, where she spent time playing with her favorite nephew, George; sitting in the library; and revising Sense and Sensibility. Visitors to the House can freely explore Jane’s home and beautiful cottage garden whilst learning about her life through exhibitions and displays. Hands-on activities for all ages can be found alongside in-depth information panels and family objects, housed in the rooms that Jane would have known. Ever fascinated by the world of stories, Austen began to write in bound notebooks.

Free parking is provided in the public car park opposite the Museum beyond the pub car park. In 1809, Edward offered his mother and sisters this small house on his Chawton estate. "We use the language of religion when talking about writers’ houses," Dunford observes. In the kitchen, for example, you'll hear actress Gina Beck as Mrs. Bates, a character in Emma, praising a certain batch of baked apples, as well as a recipe from the Austens' close family friend Martha Lloyd.

"[Austen is] an extraordinary writer in that she encourages this sense of intimacy with the reader," Sutherland says via Zoom. Kathryn Sutherland, a celebrated professor at Oxford and the Austen House's education trustee, says that the house's new exhibits offer readers new avenues to explore what is often a deeply personal relationship with Austen and her novels. Her name is a byword for wit, social observation and insight into the lives of women in the early 19th century.

Chawton offers everything from a Jane Austen trail to follow, her own home, and an Austen themed tea-room, to the magnificent Chawton Estate owned by Austen’s brother (frequented by Austen herself often). Jane Austen’s House is a registered charity in receipt of no regular public funding. We are hugely grateful to our visitors and our audiences worldwide, for all their support.

It was built by the Knight family in the 1580s following the acquisition of the estate by Nicholas Knight in 1578. There was already a manor house on the estate prior to this, first recorded in 1224. Due to the small size of our rooms, we limit capacity to 12 visitors entering the House every 20 minutes. To guarantee entry we strongly recommend pre-booking your visit to Jane Austen’s House.

She continued to write, developing her style in more ambitious works such as Lady Susan, another epistolary story about a manipulative woman who uses her sexuality, intelligence and charm to have her way with others. Austen also started to write some of her future major works, the first called Elinor and Marianne, another story told as a series of letters, which would eventually be published as Sense and Sensibility. She began drafts of First Impressions, which would later be published as Pride and Prejudice, and Susan, later published as Northanger Abbey by Jane's brother, Henry, following Austen's death.

Smaller and more intimate than Chawton House, your journey through the building will take you through the simple life that she, her mother, and her two sisters lived in from the drawing-room to the dining room, and bedrooms. You will follow a linear path through the house after a short introduction from the staff and end at the gift shop and library. In 1816, at the age of 41, Austen started to become ill with what some say might have been Addison's disease. She made impressive efforts to continue working at a normal pace, editing older works as well as starting a new novel called The Brothers, which would be published after her death as Sanditon. At some point, Austen's condition deteriorated to such a degree that she ceased writing.

This inspiring Hampshire cottage was Jane Austen’s home and the birthplace of her six beloved novels. Jane Austen’s House Museum is located in the rural village of Chawton near the town of Alton in Hampshire. The historic city of Winchester is just over 15 miles to the south west of the village, and the market town of Farnham is 10 miles to the west. Formally known as Chawton Cottage, the house in which Austen spent her final years was originally built in the late 17th century. Originally home to local farmers in the area, the house briefly became a public inn from 1781 to 1787, before being let by Austen’s elder brother Edward Austen Knight to Bailiff Bridger Steward after two murders were reported at the house.

The name is usually a slang demonym for Mexico City natives, but the chef/owner was emphatic on our visit that this isn't food meant to evoke CDMX. It's Mex-Tex, a term Guzmán uses to describe the Mexican-forward version of Tex-Mex cuisine (Guzmán's roots are in the Yucatán). The result is a collection of dishes with names and cooking techniques that ignite the chef's passion and creativity.

Throughout 2013, the museum will celebrate 200 years of Pride and Prejudice with an exhibition that explores the story of the novel and the history of its writing.

Just eight minutes walk down the road from Chawton House is Jane Austen’s House. This is where Jane Austen lived for the last eight years of her life and is a beloved museum dedicated to Jane Austen. It was in this cottage that Jane Austen revised, wrote, and had published all six of her novels. St. Nicholas ChurchSteventon, HampshireEvery good Austen novel ends with a wedding, and it’s not hard to imagine the quaint country affairs that captivated the author taking place at the mottled stone church of St. Nicholas in Steventon. Constructed around 1200, the secluded Norman structure, with its three-feet-thick walls and medieval paintings, was a familiar sight for Austen, whose family inhabited the nearby rectory and attended mass at the church. Austen lived in Steventon for her first 25 years, during which time she wrote the majority of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey.

Life

Jane lived in this house for the last eight years of her life, but in May 1817, after a period of ill health, she left Chawton to seek medical treatment in Winchester. She died two months later, on 18 July 1817, and was buried in Winchester Cathedral. In 1769 the House was purchased by the Knight family, distant relatives of the Austens, and became part of their Chawton estate, occupied by the bailiff. When Mr and Mrs Knight did not have children of their own, they formally adopted Jane’s brother Edward as their heir. "Ah! there is nothing like staying at home for real comfort," declares Mrs. Elton in Austen's 1815 novel Emma.

The rectory was demolished shortly after her death in 1817—a lime tree planted by Jane’s elder brother James still marks the spot where it stood—but St. Nicholas remains unchanged. The house reopened to the public on August 8, as Covid-19 restrictions began to ease in the United Kingdom, but the experience was quite different from pre-pandemic times. Further, in the old days, Dunford says—that is, before March—the house offered visitors all manner of hands-on activities.

He chronicled the experience in an article titled "Rejecting Jane," a fitting tribute to an author who could appreciate humor and wit. And don’t follow Mrs. Elton's preference in "Emma" when she says that “there’s nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” Real comfort is in deciphering and dress-up. Though written in third person, Francis is believed to have penned it himself in his late 80s, which would explain why the neat handwriting devolves into chicken scratch in later pages. The window transparencies at the estate which she mentions in her letters are also thought to be referenced in Mansfield Park within Fanny Price’s East Room. While writing at her home in Chawton in 1809, Austen intentionally preserved a squeaky hinge on her door so she could hide her pages before interlopers could announce themselves. She was equally discreet when publishing her early novels, choosing to use “By a Lady” for the title page of Sense and Sensibility in 1811, and “By the Author of Sense and Sensibility” for Pride and Prejudice in 1813.

While not widely known in her own time, Jane Austen's comic novels of love among the landed gentry gained popularity after 1869, and her reputation skyrocketed in the 20th century. Her novels, including Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, are considered literary classics, bridging the gap between romance and realism. The hope is that the rare document could shed some new light on the family life of one of English literature's most beloved writers. Indeed, once all of the entries are compiled, the final transcription will be published online and made available to the public. The museum acquired the manuscript at an auction in 2023 from Austen’s descendents.

“At that moment she felt that to be mistress of Pemberley might be something! ” Some scholars credit the palatial Chatsworth House—home of the Duke and Duchess of Cavendish for 16 generations—as Austen’s inspiration behind the fictional estate. In fact, the 2005 film version of Pride & Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley, cast Chatsworth in the role. Visitors can peruse the house’s 30 rooms, stroll the 105-acre garden or take in the extensive private art collection—including the dramatic sculpture gallery featured in the Hollywood film.

From grand aristocratic estates to rustic local farm shops, there’s no better way to discover the mysterious Austen and the bucolic inspirations behind Pride and Prejudice than to visit the small cluster of English counties she called home. Pride and Prejudice, initially submitted under the title, “First Impressions,” was rejected on its first attempt at publication in 1797. It would take 16 more years before the romance-starved world would be introduced to wise Elizabeth Bennet, the baffling Mr. Darcy and the four Bennet sisters on their quest to find genteel husbands in the English countryside. Since that time, the novel’s popularity has continued to snowball, engendering modern adaptations including the films Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and Bollywood’s Bride and Prejudice (2004), and of course, the Quirk Books spin-off, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2009). Instead, the witty, full-cheeked 21-year-old—who loved to dance and flirt at assembly room balls and often peppered letters to her sister with scathing commentary about family acquaintances—wrote one of history’s most celebrated novels.

This is not to mention the various screen adaptations that have been made of Austen’s works. On the dessert menu, the Chilango Choco Taco ($14), cayenne-laced strawberry ice cream with candied pecans and Mexican chocolate on our visit, has been getting lots of online chatter. Once you have sent your transcription back to us, we will check it through and compile a full transcript of the whole Memoir.

She is celebrated as a social observer, a moralist, a comic genius, and as a popular and universal writer. It’s all quite an achievement for the younger daughter of a country Rector who completed her formal education at the age of eleven and was never publicly acknowledged as a writer during her lifetime. Today, 200 years after her death, Jane Austen’s six completed novels – Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion – are known and loved around the world.

To acquire a more formal education, Austen and Cassandra were sent to boarding schools during Austen's pre-adolescence. During this time, Austen and her sister caught typhus, with Austen nearly succumbing to the illness. After a short period of formal education cut short by financial constraints, they returned home and lived with the family from that time forward. Over the span of her life, Austen would become especially close to her father and older sister, Cassandra. Directly across the road from Jane Austen’s house with a lovely view of the cottage, you can enjoy an afternoon tea or light meal at Cassandra’s Cup Tea Room which is named after Austen’s sister Cassandra. They also have a bathroom and WIFI available to catch up on the day and a selection of local produce and food-related souvenirs.

The house has undergone centuries of change and development as it has passed through different hands, making it rich with quirky and fascinating features, from graffiti on paintings and ‘witch marks’ on walls, to heraldic stained glass windows and ornately carved fireplaces. If you are looking for things to do in Hampshire, exploring Chawton House and its features makes a great day out. Jane Austen’s House has Accredited Museum status under Arts Council England’s Accreditation Scheme and is a registered charity in receipt of no regular public funding. If you would like to support us by making a donation to the Museum, please visit our Support Us pages. After an appeal by the Jane Austen Society, the house was bought by Mr. T.E. Carpenter who turned it into a Museum dedicated to the life and works of Jane Austen, opening to the public in 1949.
